Dessert

Mousse Call: Chocolate-Orange Avocado Mousse

Vegan chocolate-orange avocado mousse in glass cups topped with orange zest and cacao nibs

Ripe avocado blends into a glossy cocoa mousse with bright orange zest and just enough maple sweetness. It is a no-cook dessert that feels fancy but takes only minutes to make.

Grab this

  • 3 large ripe avocados (about 450 g flesh)
  • 1/3 cup (35 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup (80 mL) pure maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup (80 mL) unsweetened soy milk
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest, plus more for serving
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine salt
  • 2 tablespoons cacao nibs, optional

Do this

  1. Halve the avocados, remove the pits and scoop the flesh into a food processor or high-speed blender.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, maple syrup, soy milk, orange juice, orange zest, vanilla and salt.
  3. Blend for 1 to 2 minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed, until completely smooth and glossy. If the mousse is too thick to blend, add soy milk 1 tablespoon at a time.
  4. Taste and blend in another teaspoon of maple syrup or orange juice if desired.
  5. Divide among six small dessert cups. Serve right away for a soft mousse, or cover and chill for 30 minutes for a firmer texture.
  6. Finish with a little orange zest and the optional cacao nibs just before serving.

Easy swaps

  • Soy-free: replace the soy milk with unsweetened oat, almond or coconut milk. Allergen note: the listed recipe contains soy; almond milk contains tree nuts, and coconut milk contains coconut.
  • Gluten-free: the listed ingredients are naturally gluten-free, but choose certified gluten-free plant milk, cocoa, vanilla and cacao nibs if cross-contact is a concern.
  • No maple syrup: use agave nectar in the same amount. Check flavoured sweeteners for added ingredients if you have allergies.
  • No cacao nibs: omit them or use chopped pumpkin seeds for crunch. Allergen note: check packaged seeds for cross-contact; people with avocado or latex-fruit sensitivity should avoid avocado if advised by their healthcare professional.
