Orange You Glad It’s Tofu?

Sticky orange marmalade tofu rice bowl with steamed broccoli and green onions

This sticky, citrusy tofu bowl turns marmalade into a weeknight shortcut. Crisp cubes, bright broccoli and fluffy rice make dinner feel far fancier than the effort involved.

Grab this

  • 1 block (350 g) extra-firm tofu, drained and patted dry
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon neutral cooking oil
  • 1/3 cup orange marmalade
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger, or 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 3 cups cooked rice
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)

Do this

  1. If needed, cook the rice according to the package directions. Steam or microwave the broccoli until bright green and just tender.
  2. Cut the tofu into bite-size cubes. Add it to a bowl, sprinkle with the cornstarch and toss gently until every piece has a light coating.
  3. Heat the oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden and crisp on several sides.
  4. While the tofu cooks, whisk the marmalade, soy sauce, rice vinegar, ginger and water in a small bowl.
  5. Turn the heat to medium-low. Pour the sauce over the tofu and stir for 2 to 3 minutes, until the glaze bubbles and clings to the cubes.
  6. Divide the rice, broccoli and sticky tofu among four bowls. Finish with green onions and sesame seeds, if using.

Easy swaps

  • Gluten-free: use certified gluten-free tamari instead of soy sauce and check that the marmalade is gluten-free. Regular soy sauce commonly contains wheat.
  • Soy-free: replace the tofu with two 398 mL cans of chickpeas, drained and dried, and use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce. The standard recipe contains soy.
  • No cornstarch: use arrowroot starch or potato starch in the same amount.
  • No marmalade: use 1/4 cup apricot jam plus 2 tablespoons orange juice. The flavour will be softer but still bright and sticky.
  • Sesame-free: simply omit the optional sesame seeds. Sesame is a priority allergen in Canada.
