Tray Expectations: A Vegan Meal Needs Its Own Booking

Your seat can be confirmed while lunch is not. Give the meal request its own place on your travel timeline, with the right option, carrier and deadline.
Picture the holiday checklist: passport, charger, window seat, excellent socks. Lunch deserves a line of its own. A confirmed flight reservation and a requested vegan meal are two different pieces of travel planning. The useful approach is to follow the meal through the journey rather than wait for the trolley to reveal the plot.
At booking, choose the vegan option explicitly. Air Canada and Emirates both identify their vegan meal with the code VGML. Air Canada distinguishes it from VLML, its lacto-ovo vegetarian option, which can include eggs and dairy. British Airways likewise describes its vegan meal separately from its vegetarian meal and specifically excludes honey, eggs and dairy from the vegan version. A friendly-looking vegetarian label is not the same request.
Before assuming a tray is available, check the service on that flight. Air Canada lists special meals in North American Business Class and Premium Economy, and on international flights where meal service is provided, but excludes its Bistro service. British Airways says dietary-specific meals are unavailable in Euro Traveller, its short-haul economy cabin. A vegan option somewhere in an airlineās system does not establish availability on every ticket.
Several days before departure, check the actual cutoff rather than relying on a remembered one-day rule. Air Canada asks for special-meal requests at least 24 hours before the first flight in the itinerary. British Airways currently specifies 24 hours for flights from Heathrow or Gatwick, but 36 hours for flights to those airports. Emirates allows dietary-meal booking through Manage Your Booking until 24 hours before departure. These are published examples, not a universal airline timetable.
A partner-operated connection needs particular attention. Air Canada directs passengers whose itinerary includes a codeshare or another airlineās flight to contact its reservations team, rather than request that meal online, so it can notify the other carrier. Our practical suggestion is to keep a small flight-by-flight note: operating airline, meal requested and confirmation received. Include the return journey, not just the first departure.
If a flight, date or booking changes, revisit that note. Asking whether the meal request is still attached to each affected segment is a planning precaution, not a claim that every change deletes it. Save any confirmation and use the airlineās official booking channel if something looks unresolved. The point is to settle a service request while there is still time to act, not to negotiate a new recipe after boarding.
While packing, add a modest backup that suits your dietary needs. CATSAās current Canadian screening guidance permits solid foods such as crackers, muffins and granola bars. Spreadable or pourable foods fall under liquid and gel restrictions: generally containers of 100 mL or less inside the permitted one-litre liquids bag. Food that passes security can still face destination import rules, so check those separately, including any pre-clearance requirements. Choose packaged snacks that are shelf-stable and confirmed vegan rather than assuming the familiar wrapper settles the ingredients.
At meal service, politely identify your request and check any separate accompaniments before eating. A vegan booking is also not an allergy plan. British Airways warns that dietary meals can contain allergens such as tree nuts or sesame and may not suit severe or multiple allergies. If that applies, follow the carrierās allergy guidance and arrange appropriate advice before travelling rather than treating VGML as an allergen-free promise.
These airline and screening details were checked on October 17, 2026. Recheck the linked official pages for your own route because services and deadlines can change. The small habit worth keeping is a travel timeline: select the meal, meet the cutoff, verify changes and pack a suitable backup. Your socks can remain spontaneous. Lunch benefits from a reservation.
